How to prevent becoming infected

The best way is to have good internet security software that is up to date.

Avoid Free Anti-virus programs. Mostly they are just a teaser to get you to buy the full version. My experience is that free anti-virus programs do not give enough protection.

Avoid doing the things that get you infected in the first place.

Infections mostly come from:

• SPAM (Unsolicited Junk Email). Never open attachments from these emails.
• Anything you get for free should be questioned.
• File sharing sites e.g. Limewire. Downloading music, video, photo's or programs from file sharing sites is very risky. This is an easy way to spread Malware.
• ActiveX controls. When Internet Explorer displays a yellow bar telling you that you need additional software to view a web page, in most cases it is a Malware infection.
• Videos. If you open a video from a web site and it tells you you don't have the correct "Codec" pr "Player" to view the video, be very careful. I have seen many severe viruses installed this way.
